Sixth Form Students were all invited on a trip to the National Apprenticeship Show, which was held at the Cheltenham Racecourse. The show was well attended by local employers.

Students enjoyed liaising with a wide range of companies to discuss apprenticeships and career prospects available. These included Vets for Pets, Ultra Electronics, Avara Foods, Naval Service, the British Army, Fire Service and Kohler, which comprises of three market leading bathroom brands.

Technical cyber security companies were present such as the global L3 Harris, Cyber Central and many Ministry of Defence apprenticeship opportunities were highlighted.  Students considering careers in catering and hospitality liaised with nationwide companies such as Marston’s, Greene King and Mitchells & Butlers. Engineering careers with Hitachi Rail and utility companies, as well as aerospace engineering with Safran were showcased.

Our group learnt there are over 350 different careers within the NHS, as well as what a huge growth sector there is in construction careers with Taylor Wimpey, National Composites Centre and Building Material Careers. Students with a financial interest discussed opportunities with EY, AXA and Grant Thornton. A vast number of employers opened our student’s eyes to careers they had not considered, for example, horseracing has such a wide range of roles available and are the largest sport employer in the UK- 17,400 employed full time in British racing industry- over 10,000 work directly with horses. New roles within the industry are social media roles and event management. As well as the role of jockey which immediately came to students’ minds, there are also roles in administration and management, business analysts, jockeys agent, sales and marketing executives, finance controllers, human resources, racing groom, assistant trainer. Jobs in breeding include bloodstock agent, pedigree researcher, stallion handler, stud manager and stud groom. Other staff working at a racecourse including; catering, clerk of the course, event manager and racecourse safety officer.

The trip certainly highlighted to our students the huge range of jobs, which can be found within individual companies or sectors.
