Cassandra Sonnet, teacher of English at Frome College, delivered a guest lecture about effective teaching techniques in the English classroom to trainee teachers/Education students at the University of the West of England.  Drawing on findings from a PhD research project into the impact of iPad use on critical thinking, which she collaborated on, the
session explored a range of ways to challenge students' thinking and promote effective discussion. The classroom research, conducted by Alison Douthwaite, a former Frome College teacher, as part of her PhD study at the University of Bath, explores innovative ways to bring the English curriculum into 21st Century and maintain academic challenge.

Cassandra said "This is a fantastic opportunity for university students to see first hand how academic theory and research can impact classroom practice in a positive and dynamic way. Frome College is an educational establishment that offers teachers the freedom to study pedagogical theories, reflect on findings and implement key ideas in our own schemes of learning. We have been very lucky to establish such strong links with UWE and greatly enjoyed the opportunity to extend the work we do with them to support trainee teachers."  

Alison Douthwaite added "This was a fantastic opportunity to discuss recent research insights into effective English teaching with new entrants to the profession. It was great to see their enthusiasm and energy for learning and to hear their ideas about how this research could be applied in their own classrooms."
