Congratulations to our teams in the first round of the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition: A Debate,  which was held on Wednesday 29 January in Selwood Academy at 6.30pm.

Our winning debating team in first place comprised of, Chair, Silvana Rogers, Proposer, Willow Lamont Jiggens, and Opposer, Elianne Cann. Their motion was, “This house believes that setting in secondary schools is a positive thing.”  Well done to Willow, who received ‘Best Speaker’.

Willow, Silvana and Elianne wrote, “Having prepared intensively for two weeks in the run up to the first round, we felt nervous but excited when we arrived at Selwood. After the running order was decided the tension rose.  All three Frome College teams were strong, with an interesting range of topics – from setting by ability in school, through the body positivity movement to whether we live in a dystopian society.  We were delighted when the judges decided our team was the winner; we will compete in the second round on 13 February. Wish us luck!  We would strongly recommend the Youth Speaks to all young people with anything to say.”

Our runners up were, Chair, Izzy Witcombe, Proposer, Sam Young, and Opposer, Patrycja Raczkowska.
Their motion was “This house believes we are living in a dystopian society.”

The next round of the competition is at the Standerwick Suite on Thursday 13 February, and we wish them all good luck!
