On Tuesday 8 October, Frome College celebrated Ada Lovelace Day. Ada Lovelace is widely regarded as the first computer programmer and a pioneer of constructing algorithms.

Twenty-five staff members wore algorithm tags on lanyards while the students, armed with a scavenger hunt sheet, solved at least eight to win a prize. In addition to solving the algorithms, the computer science students were assigned the task of finding the syntax and logic errors on five of the cards. The percentage of women entering computer science at GCSE and A Level has not risen in several years. Frome College boasts a healthy computer science cohort with two classes in Year 9, one in Year 10, two in Year 11, and 25 A Level students.

In total less than 10 percent are women. By promoting Ada Lovelace Day and demonstrating the basic tenets of problem solving using algorithms, we hope to continue growing and nurturing the next generation of computer scientists at Frome College.
