The Government have introduced a programme of GCSE reform that began with the introduction of new GCSEs in Maths and English to be first examined in 2017. The second stage of the reforms includes a wider range of GCSEs and will include many subjects your child will be studying. These include: the Sciences, History, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), Religion and Philosophy (R&P), Design Technology, Art and Design, Drama, Music, Physical Education (PE) and Computer Science. Information on all of the details concerning these new GCSEs has not yet been fully released, however, the key features are:

  • Graded on a scale 1-9 (9 being the highest), this replaces the current A* - G grading
  • No tiering except in Maths, Science and MFL. Under the previous system, foundation and higher tier papers were available in many subjects to support students of different abilities
  • A fully linear structure, i.e. no modules, no coursework, no controlled assessments, except 10% in Science for practical experiments
  • Exams are the default method of assessment, ‘except where they cannot provide valid assessment of the skills required’
  • Increased extended writing with fewer bite sized questions in examinations
  • Focus on a knowledge-based curriculum.

We start getting to know our potential new students before they arrive at the College. In the autumn of Year 8, parents apply to the Local Authority for admission to the College, after which we follow a detailed transfer process with the child's current school.

We operate a well-established transfer process for new Year 9 students and parents.

Our College Admissions Officer oversees arrangements for all new students entering Years 9, 10 and 11, and our Head of Sixth Form, Dr J Sadowski, welcomes all Year 12 and 13 students.
