Combined Cadet Force (Royal Navy) (CCF(RN)
Contingent Commander: Sue Bailey (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)
Senior Staff Instructor: Stephen Perry (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

The CCF is up and running again and welcome new cadets from all year groups if you wish to take up this opportunity. Stephen Perry (SSI) and Sue Bailey have some activities planned for the rest of the academic year and will publish these when they have been confirmed. Cadets who are already on role are welcome to introduce themselves to us, or contact us using the email above.

In the Autumn term we took some cadets, and other students who have shown an interest in cadets, on a visit to HMS Collingwood. All activities are hosted by qualified and experienced RN instructors who are specialists in training young people and who regularly work with schools to provide youth opportunities of this nature. During the visit students will participate in multiple activities that range from low ropes, obstacle course and cadet field gun training all involving practical leadership tasks (PLTs), all the while under the supervision of RN instructors and whilst accompanied by staff and volunteer staff from Frome College.
Next term we are looking at visiting a Royal Navy air station and looking at opportunities to do archery and mountain biking plus other cadet related activities.
Come and make yourself known if you are interested in finding out more!

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Frome College

Co-ordinator – Sue Bailey (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is offered at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels and is open to all students who want to take part. The award aims to encourage young people between the ages of 13 (start of Year 9) and their 25th birthday, to take up new interests and learn new skills. Participants work on programmes of voluntary work, physical and non-physical skills and participate in an expedition, involving camping and walking. For more information about the Award, follow this link: www.dofe.org

At Frome College the programme is offered at the following times:
Year 9 – Bronze level – introduced early in year in assemblies. The bronze level should be completed by October in Year 10.
Year 10 – Silver level – mostly people continuing from bronze DofE.
Year 10 students who missed the bronze level can also start DofE at silver level in Year 10
Year 11 – The Silver level should be finished early in Year 11. Students can choose to register for the Gold Award when they are 16 years old – expeditions will be offered in Year 12.
Year 12 – Gold level – students wishing to do the Gold level need to be ready to start at the beginning of Year 12. Students wishing to do the Gold level who missed out on the Bronze and Silver levels can do so, but will need to do extra training to catch up.
Year 13 – Students should aim to complete Gold level.
Costs vary from year to year. Bronze and Silver levels cost about £100 in total. Gold costs depend on the type of expeditions chosen and where we go. Normally the cost of the two required expeditions is about £60-100 each. Students also need to do a residential at Gold level which can be free to expensive depending on what is chosen.
However, cost need not be a barrier. Bursaries are available for students who would be eligible for free school meals. Please contact Steve Marsh if you would like to apply for help. There is also a link to a Somerset Bursary Form below.

Mondays: 3 – 4pm in the College Library.
Wednesdays: broadcasting after school in the Town Hall
Every fourth Saturday: broadcasting in the Town Hall

This is a free club but commitment to broadcasts is important.
Working in collaboration with community radio station FromeFM offers students of all abilities the chance to be part of the planning, presentation and editing of regular live broadcast shows and special events. The aim of the Radio Club is not just to make radio features about College, but to help students engage with the wider community in Frome, whilst gaining valuable communication and technical skills along the way – as well as having a lot of fun!
Students are required to make their own way to and from Frome Town Hall. There is no charge to join the Radio Club, but students may be asked to take part in fundraising activities to pay for training and equipment, and parents are encouraged to become ‘Friends of FromeFM’, details of which can be found online at frome.fm. To join, or for more details, please email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

A Level pieces are performed in the drama studio as well as our annual GCSE performance evening ‘Just Originals’ which showcases our Year 11's work every year.

Exchanges and visits

Our French and German exchange programme is based on Frome’s twin towns, Chateau Gontier and Murrhardt.

Every year we have an extensive programme of foreign visits. In past years these have included historical studies of the First World War Battlefields, Business Studies trips to Berlin, visits to art exhibitions in Amsterdam and Paris, Religion and Philosophy trips to Rome, skiing trips to various parts of Europe and Design Technology trips to Rome and Barcelona.

Educational visits within this country are regularly arranged by many curriculum teams. These include theatre visits for English and Drama, fieldwork for Geography and Biology, and more. Our link with Villiers Park Residential centre offers our A Level students opportunities for advanced study weeks. Kilver Court also offers opportunities for able students in a number of subject areas.

Over 100 students have instrumental tuition in College with specialist visiting tutors - several students have passed Grade 8 with distinction. Where possible there is continuity of teacher between the Middle School and College.

These musicians help make up various music groups such as the College Band, String Ensemble, College Choir, Wind Group, the Sax group and String and Wind quartets. Regular performances are held throughout the year.

We play competitive fixtures and cup competitions in many sports at local, county, national and international level.

An extensive programme of house competitions takes place in team sports and we have open competitions in individual sports such as squash and tennis.
