On Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 May, Frome College hosted 61 business people from the local community who gave their valuable time to provide a mock interview experience for 265 Year 10 students.

Interviewers came from a wide range of backgrounds including law, finance, rail, farming, army, water industry, architecture, police, sport, counselling and human resources. Students varied in abilities and we were particularly proud that all the students, even those who struggle to attend mainstream education, attended an interview, which will have provided them with increased self-confidence as well as tips and advice from employers on how they can further improve for a real interview. Each student received a score for 18 aspects of their performance including; smart appearance, greeting interviewers professionally, discussion ability, confidence, good answers, well presented CV, evidence of clubs attended and attitude. They were then ranked on whether they would have been selected for employment or not based on their performance. Feedback tips were logged in their interview booklets, and included; what they did well, points to consider for improvement, and suggested next steps.

Earlier in the year, students were taught how to write a strong CV and showcase their skills. The CVs they later created in PSHE lessons were provided to the employers prior to interview. They also received an assembly about interview skills as well as tutor time practice at answering questions. While many students arrived looking rather nervous, most were relieved and elated after the interview, expressing how it had been much better than anticipated and how friendly and helpful the interviewers were. Kieron Eastwood explained that the interview gave him ‘a massive boost in confidence’.  He was very nervous at the start but was soon put at ease, and said the process was ‘very well worth doing’. All students asked by our Rotarian steward Mike Darville, gave the interview event 10/10.

Aspiring journalist Martha Lynn aged 14, attended the mock interviews and wrote, “After my interview had finished, I asked both business people what they thought of the school as a whole, and the students’ general response.  Both seemed to be highly impressed by the students’ positive attitude and intricate answers to their questions. They commented, “Even the nervous students tried their best and put the effort into responding and communicating”. They were also pleased with the politeness and respect which came from students “We normally have at least one or two students who are not prepared to answer questions or use the experience to reflect on improvement. However, every student we have seen today has tried their very best and answered every question with enthusiasm. ” Speaking to fellow students many commented that they received high scores in their booklets, generally getting all fives and fours. One student said, “My nerves settled once I sat down and started speaking, the interviewers were friendly enough to make me feel comfortable.”

This annual event was arranged by our employability co-ordinator Louise Friend, who commented how extremely proud she was of the students; as the employers globally commented on what a delight they were, some lovely personalities, impressive answers and were described as ‘a credit to Frome College’. Interviewers overwhelmingly enthused about how much they had enjoyed meeting the students and the day as a whole. Margaret Gilmour from Frome Rotary Club said, “I have been interviewing at the College for several years now. I have seen the preparation of students for life at work improve over the years and Frome College are to be commended for the tremendous effort they put in this year in getting all of Year 10, almost 300 students over 2 days, to undertake a mock interview.  Students were in my view better prepared than ever.  It was the first time for most of them to experience a face-to-face interview, and the majority were nervous but I thought that the standard of their performance at interview was high.  Very well done to the College and to all the students who took part.”

Frome College would like to extend a large thank you to all business interviewers for giving their valuable time to help our students, and to Rotary of Frome for sponsoring the mock interview booklets for students to keep, containing their individual feedback and tips for a strong performance at interview.
