A former Frome College English teacher has recently completed a research placement studying the impact of iPad use on criticality as part of her PHD studies at the University of Bath.

Mrs Douthwaite taught at the College for 14 years and has spent the last academic year working with a class of Year 10 English students. She said “New technologies are changing the ways we communicate, but there is little research to inform teachers about how students could usefully use them in English classrooms. Finding effective approaches to support learning, which draw on both tried-and-tested ways of teaching and the potentials of modern technologies, will help ensure students get the very best English education."

Mrs Sonnet, who is collaborating in the research and whose Year 10 English class was included in the study, said, "It is a real coup for the College to have PHD research undertaken here. It shows that we are a progressive educational establishment who value teaching and learning, and how we can move this forward. The students were superb and are rightly proud of the fact that their work may help to develop educational pedagogy and advance ways of using digital technologies in teaching across the whole country.”

Students have been working together in groups as they study William Shakespeare's ‘The Merchant of Venice’ and Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol’.  They used iPads to create visual presentations of their thought processes and interpretations, which were then shared and discussed with the class. This gave them an opportunity to develop their criticality in creative and collaborative ways as well as encouraging them to use language and develop presentation skills.
